Peacocks do not enter a room. They arrive, and then they wait for the compliment. This is a jeweled court done in gold-lined enamel: emerald tails, ruby plumes, sapphire eyes set like cabochons, and a chrysanthemum that would also like to be noticed. The jokers do the heavy lifting. One is a small, round, furious chick glaring out of the wall like it has been dealt nothing but singles all night. The other hauls a borrowed feather twice its size, which is the most relatable thing on your table.
